IN CHARACTER
Name: Brendan Frye

History: link to the synopsis on wiki.

Presentation: Brendan Frye is certainly not a hero. Nor is he an anti-hero--if anything he's a true neutral force. In a teenager's world, high school is the end all be all of existence but Brendan's always been the outsider, the lone wolf. The impartial being in a world of drama and mystery and intrigue.

Brendan's smart--a little too smart for his own good. While he has a tendency to be judgmental, and an incredibly cynical teen, he tends to keep it to himself. He keeps a lot of feelings to himself, internalizing problems, hardly voicing them. There's very little that he seems to like, and is perfectly at home with not having any friends whatsoever. The closest thing to a friend he has is Brian, and even then it seems to be almost a work-partnership level. As a whole Brendan comes across as detached and somewhat aloof. This is not, however, the entire depth of his personality.

Keen, observant, and very good at thinking on the spot, the easily adaptable Brendan has a knack for sniffing out what's wrong and who's lying. He's used to games being played around him and knows the signs, and normally uses this as a self-defense mechanism to steer clear of it. There are cases--such as the film--that cause him to stick his neck out for others. It's hard to throw him a curve ball: he assess the situation and all possible scenarios, often outright lying or telling a completely different story to coax some sap into telling him what he wants. He's not above deceit and trickery, certainly not above breaking the law or bending the rules.

When he does find someone he likes, Brendan's more negative characteristics come to view--but most are under the guise of trying to do the right thing. He can be seen as very, very over-protective, almost to a possessive point. If he sees that someone he loves seems to be in trouble (be it real risky business or just messing with the someone that Brendan deems part of the wrong crowd), he'll stop at nothing to fix it, often going day without sleep or an entire week without a well needed hospital trip. He supersedes the opinions of others with the opinion of his own, thinking it to be unbiased. This is, obviously, false, and Brendan has no problems with other people getting angry at him for trying to fix their own mistakes--even if they're ones he's imagined.

Motivations: Keen, observant, and very good at thinking on the spot, the easily adaptable Brendan has a knack for sniffing out what's wrong and who's lying. This is, obviously, false, and Brendan has no problems with other people getting angry at him for trying to fix their own mistakes--even if they're ones he's imagined.

Despite all of this, the clever high schooler is not arrogant. Stubborn, but he has a large dose of humility which most likely comes from his severe cynicism and constantly seeing the worst in most people. He's a good kid, if jaded entirely too early, and at the end of the day Brendan can be counted on as an extremely useful ally.

If, of course, he decides to trust you.

SAMPLES
Thread: Sample from Ataraxion.
Prose: Brendan's not sure what he expects, but it's certainly not this. Something about impressing the judges is told to him as he's shoved into a room rather unceremoniously, and it's honestly a miracle that his long limbs balance, keeping him upwards and making the light shove look more like a long stride.

Straightening himself out doesn't exactly account for where he is, or the fact that this is incredibly disorienting. There are things on the table--the glint of metal on harsh linoleum floors, the various weapons and tools left around. No guns, he realizes, and somehow feels a little safer.

A little.

It's when his eyes scan the colourful alcove that he realizes he's not alone. He's tired--ragged--and all he can see is blurred shapes and swirls of colour. He can pick out weapons closer to him just fine, but it's not until he reaches for his glasses case and puts the rounded spectacles on that he can actually see the people. His judges?

You'd better make sure you wanna know what you wanna know. Kara's words are practically ringing in his ears, overlapping with Laura's last before he was dragged from there to here. The 'how' is something he'll focus on later, and the 'why' had been hastily explained to him. Instead, Brendan narrows his focus to what he can do. He decides on what he does best: think.

His hands aren't crossed but they are shoved in his pockets, still sore and bruised and bleeding from his escapades earlier. He's fairly sure they'll let him rest up to give him a fair advantage, but he doesn't know that for sure. He decides to test the waters:

"You guys aren't bulls that's obvious but you're not wide-eyes and you're not waving your dusty standards at everyone. That's fine." Not that his opinion mattered--but he's pacing, now. Staring at the ground as he talks. "You want to know if I've got spunk, if I've got the right chops. I can dig that. But you're going to swing and miss when it comes to the strength department."

And when Brendan looks up, he's almost--almost--smiling, tone flat, sarcastic: "In the brains department, at the very least I took Accelerated English."

What is your character scored: Brendan comes from a world where there are absolutely no superpowers or magic--and as such he has none of his own. A basic 17 year old teenager, if a little on the lithe and wiry side of the body spectrum, the bespectacled high school detective isn't anything out of the ordinary at first glance.

He has, however, an exceptionally high pain tolerance, as viewed throughout the entire movie. Where he's focused enough on a task (like, for example, figuring out the mystery of the Brick and how it relates to Emily Kostitch), his survival instincts go out the window in terms of rest and relaxation, coughing up blood and passing out multiple times because of the beatings he'd received throughout that week. And yet, through sheer will, Brendan picks himself up.

His reaction times are quicker than the average teen, and a lot of times he uses his observational skills to get out of jams if needed, most notably in fights when the high school jock hired someone to try to knife him and he took full advantage of his terrain to outsmart him and cause him to knock into a pole, losing consciousness.

Brendan is also an excellent pick-pocket, lifting things without people that know him closely noticing, and is extremely good at following people unnoticed. If Brendan doesn't want to be seen, he won't--he's very good at blending in with his surroundings.

For all of these reasons, I'd score him an 8.

Setting: Brendan's setting is Rapture, but just in case the link to the setting of Brick is here

History: Brendan Frye is a pretty typical teenager in Rapture--for the most part. His family moved from California to the bottom of the ocean, hoping to make it big as part of the great chain. Instead, his mother got a secretarial job at Sinclaire Solutions and his father worked at the fisheries, both of them disappointed but determined to make the best of it. Brendan, being a teenager, had the opportunity to branch out and make friends. He didn't. Instead, he preferred to keep to himself and read. Smart for his age, he couldn't connect with a vast majority of people in the same bracket as him. Most were either too rich and spoiled or the type to lash out, and Brendan wanted nothing to do with them.

Most of his acquaintances were getting surgeries, getting plasmids--Brendan didn't really care. Not until he met the girl of his dreams did he start paying attention. She was a splicer, constantly getting work done, constantly taking plasmids. They met and fell in love and Brendan sampled, if briefly, and never really did much more than make sure if anyone threw a punch at him could take it a little better than normal. It was definitely to his advantage. Brendan never got teased, no, but he always had a way of figuring out who to pit against who if he wanted something. No where near as nefarious as a puppet master, he merely knew what to offer if he needed to get out of a predicament. But for the most part, he was by himself.

Brendan saw what the plasmids were doing to his girlfriend--and how she was almost dependent on them and the surgery, how she was slowly breaking away from him and moving onto other people, other friends. Brendan panicked, and immediately set up her new circle of friends in a smuggling scheme. It was dangerous, but it worked--Brendan went to school one day and none of them were there. He didn't think much of it, figuring they just expelled or something. He had no idea he'd set them up for death.

His girlfriend immediately knew what was happening--knew Brendan was smart enough to do something like that and just hypocritical enough to do it: his father was a smuggler himself, often giving Brendan noir novels in paperback from. After a heated confrontation about it in Arcadia gardens, with Brendan finally admitting he did it and Emily announcing it was over, she stormed out. Brendan, in typical loner, 17 year old fashion, secluded himself from everyone.

Unlike normal teenagers, however, this continued for quite a while. It was a few months later--when everyone started arriving from different worlds--that his girlfriend had called him, desperate and afraid for her life about something. Brendan told her to meet where they'd broken up, but once she arrived she assured Brendan that everything was fine, though it was obvious she'd been splicing entirely more than usual. Something was wrong, despite her assurances that she was alright.

Two days later his ex-girlfriend was found dead by the fisheries by Brendan himself on his way to drop off a meal for his father. Strangely enough, instead of shock, Brendan knew what he had to do: taking a page from his favourite novels and radio plays and using his own wits, he began to investigate on his own, hiding the body and cracking down on the mystery.

He's figured out that it was other splicers that had killed her as a cover-up, using her as a scapegoat. It was while investigating he'd uncovered that he can't quite trust anyone, even the big wigs--Fontaine and Ryan aren't who they seem to be, and with the turbulent and hectic arrivals of people from other worlds, he's not sure who he can trust to get to the bottom of what's really going on in Rapture.

Personality: Brendan Frye is certainly not a hero. Nor is he an anti-hero--if anything he's a true neutral force. He supersedes the opinions of others with the opinion of his own, thinking it to be unbiased. This is obviously false, and there's been many instances where Brendan has fixed the "mistakes" of others that aren't technically mistakes, just Brendan's own preconceived notions.

Abilities: Brendan comes from the world of Rapture. A basic 17 year old teenager, if a little on the lithe and wiry side of the body spectrum, the bespectacled highschool detective isn't anything out of the ordinary at first glance.

He has, however, an exceptionally high pain tolerance, as viewed throughout the entire movie. For this AU, I'm giving him the armoured shell gene tonic. When he's focused enough on a task, his survival instincts go out the window in terms of rest and relaxation, not stopping for anything--there have been a few cases where he's coughed up blood and passed out multiple times because of the beatings he'd received throughout that week. And yet, through sheer will, Brendan picks himself up.

His reaction times are quicker than the average teen, and a lot of times he uses his observational skills to get out of jams if needed, taking full advantage of his terrain and general knowledge to outsmart his foe. Fight smart, not hard.

Brendan is also an excellent pick-pocket, lifting things without even people that know him closely noticing, and is extremely good at following people unnoticed. If Brendan doesn't want to be seen, he won't--he's very good at blending in with his surroundings.

On a downside, he sees only blurs without his glasses and has an incredible penchant for getting himself mixed up with very, very bad company that could easily go south...

Perhaps not so much of an ability as a quirk, Brendan has an unusual way of speaking--spending entirely too much time with his radio plays and books--he's picked up his own pattern of speaking and it's pretty much in tune with the Maltese Falcon.

How did your character arrive in Rapture? Own volition

Why are you choosing to continue your character's development here from another RP? N/A

Network sample: [ Brendan's actually bucked up enough to pay for an EZWave--or perhaps he stole the money from those passing by? He certainly doesn't have a job. Feel free to notice your wallets are a little lighter now that he's finally caved in. He doesn't trust anyone, really--and that's exactly why he's figured out a way to make this anonymous, first. ]

Any of you cats know where to find the right stuff, let me know. Bite the barber, dig? I don't have time for games.

[ Though to be honest, he's pretty sure none of them do. That's the problem with Rapture, he thinks. ]

how many of you prowl around Neptune's Bounty? And how many of you outsiders have been here for a while?

Log sample: The scene plays over and over in his mind and he can't get it out--can't keep reliving it and yet he's found himself in Arcadia gardens, found himself right on the stoop he used to read his books at. Right beneath a tree that reminded him of San Clemente, California. Something that normally helped him feel relaxed--or as relaxed as he can be--and at east. But it's different, now. Now that he knows that she's dead. She's spliced and bloodied and her gorgeous blonde hair had been torn and mottled. All he can think about is her favourite blue bracelet on that pale, slender wrist. How it looked like the only thing untouched. Brendan's fairly certain she'd been bludgeoned to death, and even more positive it was splicers.

Staring at the spot where he read wasn't doing him any good, so Brendan settled on sitting with his hands in his pockets. Instead of holding his gaze on the smooth marble, he found himself staring at a poster for the telekinesis plasmid. Happy people, happy smiling. Incredibly misleading, he thinks as he contemplates. Eventually he can't take it--he's unsure of the time that's passed, figuring it could be anywhere from 5 minutes to five hours--and he sits up, only to rearrange his position. Antsy. Anxious. You'd never be able to tell, not with the mop of hair covering his eyes, how damn still he was.

He's perched now, though--staring out from his glasses, staring at the poster, at those that pass him by. He's as still as a statue, slumped over, hand grasping wrist as he balances his elbows on his knees. It looks off, looks odd, but it makes him feel like everything's normal. Like all he's doing is watching people instead of trying not to close his eyes. Trying not to see her again. He had to figure out what was going on. Had to. But at what cost? Unearthing the splicers had only brought forth even more questions, especially ones about the bigwigs. At the moment just poking around was difficult--if he tried to do something around Ryan, the stakes were going to be raised. He didn't think he was prepared for that.

For now, all Brendan could do was stare.

How is my driving?

Problems with Brendan's portrayal? Not doing something quite right? Don't hesitate to let me know! Role playing is an amazing way to meet friends and work on characterization, but sometimes bad habits catch up with the fun and it turns into more of a chore interacting with certain people than others. If that's ever happening with me, let me know!
