Presentation: Brendan Frye is certainly not a hero. Nor is he an anti-hero--if anything he's a true neutral force. In a teenager's world, high school is the end all be all of existence but Brendan's always been the outsider, the lone wolf. The impartial being in a world of drama and mystery and intrigue.
Brendan's smart--a little too smart for his own good. While he has a tendency to be judgmental, and an incredibly cynical teen, he tends to keep it to himself. He keeps a lot of feelings to himself, internalizing problems, hardly voicing them. There's very little that he seems to like, and is perfectly at home with not having any friends whatsoever. The closest thing to a friend he has is Brian, and even then it seems to be almost a work-partnership level. As a whole Brendan comes across as detached and somewhat aloof. This is not, however, the entire depth of his personality.
Keen, observant, and very good at thinking on the spot, the easily adaptable Brendan has a knack for sniffing out what's wrong and who's lying. He's used to games being played around him and knows the signs, and normally uses this as a self-defense mechanism to steer clear of it. There are cases--such as the film--that cause him to stick his neck out for others. It's hard to throw him a curve ball: he assess the situation and all possible scenarios, often outright lying or telling a completely different story to coax some sap into telling him what he wants. He's not above deceit and trickery, certainly not above breaking the law or bending the rules.
When he does find someone he likes, Brendan's more negative characteristics come to view--but most are under the guise of trying to do the right thing. He can be seen as very, very over-protective, almost to a possessive point. If he sees that someone he loves seems to be in trouble (be it real risky business or just messing with the someone that Brendan deems part of the wrong crowd), he'll stop at nothing to fix it, often going day without sleep or an entire week without a well needed hospital trip. He supersedes the opinions of others with the opinion of his own, thinking it to be unbiased. This is, obviously, false, and Brendan has no problems with other people getting angry at him for trying to fix their own mistakes--even if they're ones he's imagined.

Despite all of this, the clever high schooler is not arrogant. Stubborn, but he has a large dose of humility which most likely comes from his severe cynicism and constantly seeing the worst in most people. He's a good kid, if jaded entirely too early, and at the end of the day Brendan can be counted on as an extremely useful ally.
If, of course, he decides to trust you.
SAMPLES
Thread: Sample from Ataraxion.
Prose: Brendan's not sure what he expects, but it's certainly not this. Something about impressing the judges is told to him as he's shoved into a room rather unceremoniously, and it's honestly a miracle that his long limbs balance, keeping him upwards and making the light shove look more like a long stride.
Straightening himself out doesn't exactly account for where he is, or the fact that this is incredibly disorienting. There are things on the table--the glint of metal on harsh linoleum floors, the various weapons and tools left around. No guns, he realizes, and somehow feels a little safer.
A little.
It's when his eyes scan the colourful alcove that he realizes he's not alone. He's tired--ragged--and all he can see is blurred shapes and swirls of colour. He can pick out weapons closer to him just fine, but it's not until he reaches for his glasses case and puts the rounded spectacles on that he can actually see the people. His judges?
You'd better make sure you wanna know what you wanna know. Kara's words are practically ringing in his ears, overlapping with Laura's last before he was dragged from there to here. The 'how' is something he'll focus on later, and the 'why' had been hastily explained to him. Instead, Brendan narrows his focus to what he can do. He decides on what he does best: think.
His hands aren't crossed but they are shoved in his pockets, still sore and bruised and bleeding from his escapades earlier. He's fairly sure they'll let him rest up to give him a fair advantage, but he doesn't know that for sure. He decides to test the waters:
"You guys aren't bulls that's obvious but you're not wide-eyes and you're not waving your dusty standards at everyone. That's fine." Not that his opinion mattered--but he's pacing, now. Staring at the ground as he talks. "You want to know if I've got spunk, if I've got the right chops. I can dig that. But you're going to swing and miss when it comes to the strength department."
And when Brendan looks up, he's almost--almost--smiling, tone flat, sarcastic: "In the brains department, at the very least I took Accelerated English."
What is your character scored: Brendan comes from a world where there are absolutely no superpowers or magic--and as such he has none of his own. A basic 17 year old teenager, if a little on the lithe and wiry side of the body spectrum, the bespectacled high school detective isn't anything out of the ordinary at first glance.
He has, however, an exceptionally high pain tolerance, as viewed throughout the entire movie. Where he's focused enough on a task (like, for example, figuring out the mystery of the Brick and how it relates to Emily Kostitch), his survival instincts go out the window in terms of rest and relaxation, coughing up blood and passing out multiple times because of the beatings he'd received throughout that week. And yet, through sheer will, Brendan picks himself up.
His reaction times are quicker than the average teen, and a lot of times he uses his observational skills to get out of jams if needed, most notably in fights when the high school jock hired someone to try to knife him and he took full advantage of his terrain to outsmart him and cause him to knock into a pole, losing consciousness.
Brendan is also an excellent pick-pocket, lifting things without people that know him closely noticing, and is extremely good at following people unnoticed. If Brendan doesn't want to be seen, he won't--he's very good at blending in with his surroundings.
For all of these reasons, I'd score him an 8.
